June 22 - Tour Day 1
Tour Day 1 started out gently, with an afternoon gathering to meet the other 20 or so tour members and our guide, Robert. After these quick introductions, we headed out for an orientation on how to use the Tube with our new 7-day Travelcards. We traveled one stop from South Kensington to Glouster for our group afternoon tea at the Bailey's Hotel. We each got our choice of teas in our own little teapot, as well as an array of finger sandwiches and desserts to share. And more kept coming! The restaurant was not prepared for Lesley to need gluten-free food (as everything but the tea clearly used flour), but once we asked if they had anything she could eat, they jumped into action, bringing a freshly made gluten-free scone, a tomato and cheese sandwich on gluten-free bread and creme brulee! They really rose to the occasion!
Following tea, it was early evening, and Robert gave us the option of walking back to our hotel or returning via Tube. He also gave advice on finding the local grocery store for anything we might want to keep in our rooms. It was a beautiful night and we enjoyed the short walk back to the hotel. The USA was playing in the World Cup this night at 11pm; alas, we did not stay awake.
